“And tomorrow we might not be together
I’m no prophet and I don’t know nature’s ways
So I’ll try and see into your eyes right now
And stay right here ‘cause these are the good old days
And stay right here ‘cause these are the good old days”
(from “Anticipation” by Carly Simon)

In 1971 the song “Anticipation” was released by Carly Simon and the world sang along and reminded each other and themselves too maybe that these are the good old days. And it’s easy to look back at that time, or maybe even any other time, and say that those were the good old days, even if those days had hard things.

But the truth is that all days have hard things.

And sure, memory can be easier to live than right here when right here is downright hard.

But right here is really all you’ve got, even if it’s not right where you want to be.

This moment, this right here and this right now, is always the only real moment.

Tomorrow and yesterday are real, true, but only in the mind. They’re neither tangible nor touchable. You can remember yesterday or worry about tomorrow, but you can never really live in either place.

Now is always the only real moment.

There’s a lot of wrong in this world.

People are hurting and yeah, we all know that hurt people, hurt people.

There’s injustice in this world, way more than there ought to be in the year 2018.

There’s too much poverty (any poverty is too much poverty) and too much hunger (and any hunger is too much hunger) and families fight and countries fight and it can seem like everyone’s fighting these days.

But these days? They’re the good old days, because this moment is always the only moment.

And this moment is alive with possibility, if you want to know the truth of it.

So much is possible in this moment.

So incredibly much is possible in this moment.

Forgiveness is possible in this moment.

Love is possible in this moment.

Standing up for what’s right, speaking out for those who can’t, choosing to see the good in the world and express gratitude for it – these are possible in this moment and really only in this moment because this moment is the only moment we live in as flesh-and-blood.

And these are the good old days, really, if we will stay right here.

And really live them.
