You’ve heard it, no doubt.

That advice, wisdom I guess, that coaches and teachers and motivational speakers like to give about mistakes being just lessons in disguise.

I think my favorite quote about this has to be Miles Davis’:

Do not fear mistakes – there are none.
~Miles Davis

Of course it could be my favorite because he was a musician, and a trumpeter, and a jazz guy, and I guess I just think they sort of tell it like it is.

But the thing is, this is true and it’s not true.

I’ve been in enough performance ensembles to say definitively that indeed, mistakes happen.

I’ve heard them.

I’ve made them.

I’ve feared making them.

But then, mistakes also tell you something. Teach you something. Lead you somewhere, if you let them.

Mistakes open up an opportunity for you to learn and improve and grow, if you’ll take them up on it.

If you don’t let yourself fear them so much that you don’t risk making them.

So yes, there are mistakes.

And no, there are none.

It all depends on what you call them.
