I’m reading the complete works of Aristotle.

No, really, I am. Or at least I’m trying to.

Okay, at least I’m trying to try to.

Because…well, because sometimes you just wanna do something and even if it’s a bit of a reach, well, you just wanna reach anyway.

I actually have no clue why I want to do this just now. But I do know that I want to do it.

Sometimes you just know it’s time.

Time to get in shape or to take that class or to make that change.

Sometimes you just know you want to do something, so you do it.

Even if it’s hard, and even if you’re not sure of all the steps, and yeah, even if you’re stepping so far outside that comfort zone of yours that it takes your breath away just a bit.

Of course this isn’t taking my breath away.

But it is outside my comfort zone.

So yeah, Aristotle.

I’m about a couple hundred pages in. The “complete works” (at least the version I’ve got) is a couple thousand pages long not including footnotes and the introduction detailing just how the translations were done, which I didn’t read because that’s really outside my comfort zone.

At any rate, the pages I’ve set out to read number 2465, and they’re divided into two incredibly large hard-cover volumes. So not really beach reading. I guess. I mean, who knows what’s “beach reading” to everyone, right? There’s probably someone out there who brings a little philosophy to the beach, to pass the time while soakin’ up the sun.

But that’s not me.

Still, I’m reading it. Because, well just because for some reason I’ve decided to immerse myself in Aristotelian thought.

Maybe because it’s really fun to say things like “Aristotelian”.

It’s kinda hard, which I guess isn’t that surprising. And it’s kinda slow going. Again, not a shocker.

But here’s the amazing thing: I’m actually able to understand this.

Another shocker? I’m sort of liking it.

Granted, it’s probably taking me about five times longer than it would take someone who’s got more than just Philosophy 101 under their belt, but you know what? That’s okay.

Going slowly is still going.

Progressing at a snail’s pace is still making progress.

And if it’s true that a body in motion stays in motion (Newtonian physics of course, another fun word!!), then all I need to do in order to keep going is to, well, keep going.

This is how momentum is built.

This is how runners start with a mile and a mindset, and daily build the muscle to make a habit out of a desire.

This is how books are written and read and relationships are grown and faith is grown, and how we grow too.

One step, one page, one mile at a time.
