Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and yes, there will be hearts and flowers and cards and candy and much attention given to romantic love and that’s all beautiful, truly. But the truth is that love can’t really exist without the foundation of kindness.

Because love, at its very core, is kindness.

And so in celebration of that, whether or not there are flowers or hearts or candy involved, I thought I’d share some of my favorite – and inspiring – kindness quotes.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” (~Aesop)

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” (~William Arthur Ward)

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.” (~Ralph Waldo Emerson)

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” (~Dalai Lama)

“What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?” (~Jean-Jacques Rousseau)

“The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.” (~William Wordsworth)

“Kindness is ever the begetter of kindness.” (~Sophocles)
