“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” (~Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Sounds a little far-fetched. A little bit out-of-touch with what really goes on here on terra-firma, y’know? I mean, sure, who wouldn’t want to believe that they can actually decide who they want to be and then go be that?
If it were that easy, wouldn’t we just all be doing it?
We aren’t. So many of us just…aren’t.
And I’m meaning no disrespect Mr. Emerson, but the thing is that we have jobs and limitations and this crazy-busy world to navigate and sure, it sounds really easy to say ‘just decide’ and then go ‘be’, but some of us are just too tired from being pulled in a hundred-thousand directions daily.
Most days, we’re all just getting sort of lost in the daily.
Most days, we’re all just a little too tired to do much dreaming.
Most days, we’re too busy making it through, to even think about who we’re destined to become.
Yeah, so maybe we could all just use a little break from most days? A time-out for grown-ups grown tired of running out of time.
Maybe what we all really need is just to take a time-out to figure out who that person-we-want-to-be is?
It’s a hard thing to do. Strange, yes, but most of us don’t want to slow down or stop even for a minute. What will we miss? What will we leave undone? How far behind will we fall?
It’s hard enough for some of us to turn the phone off for an hour, frankly.
But it’s really only there – in the quiet of not-doing – that we can really discover who we really want to be.
And frankly, I think it’s sort of important that you do discover who you really want to be. Because the world needs you. The world needs your gifts. The world needs you to be who you were created to be.
So maybe just a bit of a time-out this weekend is called for? A bit of rest, to figure out the rest of life?
To decide who you are destined to become.
So you can go be that.
